A good way of connecting with others when you arrive in Australia and staying in touch with the British Community here, would be to take a look at the following site.
Another great way of finding friends and feeling part of a community is to join the Facebook community known as Expats on the Gold Coast. It is a closed group so just request to become a member. The members of the group are really friendly and helpful and share information, from where to get money exchanged to finding a mortgage broker. They also have get togethers (including Christmas in July) so you can actually meet up and get to know them in person.
Other Facebook groups to consider are:
'Gold Coast Poms n Ozzies' and
'poms in oz'.
and of course, don't forget to keep up to date with our Britton's Guide to the Gold Coast facebook page
In my experience, one of the hardest parts about moving to Australia was that I did it alone. Hence, it was REALLY important to me that I was able to stay in contact with the family and friends that I had left in the UK (and other parts of the world).
The technology that we have today is unbelievably impressive compared to the expensive (by comparison) paper phone cards that I'd purchase from our local petrol station when I first arrived.
On arrival in Queensland, I didn't have a clue about what service providers there were here or which were the best value for what I needed. At that time some mobile plans were offering calls to the UK for $1.60 a minute. Therefore, it was imperative that I found another way to maintain the constant contact I used to have with my family.
Obviously, There are many ways of staying in contact now (such as Facebook, texts, Twitter, e-mail) but it is a reassuring feeling, when you want to actually speak or see someone you love on the other side of the world, not to be watching the clock because you are and worried what it is costing you (or them) for the 'luxury'.
I want to share with you some of the different methods I have used personally and that are available now.
